Pettit Kohn Attorney Emily Arnett Honored by United Through Reading
Pettit Kohn Ingrassia Lutz & Dolin attorney Emily Arnett was recently recognized by the non-profit organization, United Through Reading (UTR). Emily provided pro bono legal services to the UTR Board of Directors and was recognized for her dedication, commitment, and leadership contributions to the United Through Reading Board of Trustees’ Ad Hoc Advisory Committee. She was also honored for her service on the Golf Tournament Committee, Storybook Ball Leadership Committee, and the Storybook Ball Host Committee.
“As a military spouse, I have a particular affinity for families dealing with a deployed service member,” said Ms. Arnett. “I’m proud to volunteer and provide legal help to an organization that provides support, education, and literacy to the military community.”
Emily is an attorney in Pettit Kohn’s Professional Liability and Business Litigation groups. She obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law and has volunteered for various non-profit groups throughout her career. In recognition of her various volunteer efforts, Emily was previously awarded the Army Achievement Medal for her Patriotic Civilian Service in 2015 and 2016. She is also an active member of Military Spouse JD Network, a non-profit and advocacy organization for military spouse attorneys.
About United Through Reading
United Through Reading is a non-profit 501(c)(3) public benefit organization founded in 1989. UTR’s mission is to unite military families facing physical separation by facilitating the bonding experience of reading aloud. They offer service members the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to children at home. This eases the stress of separation, maintains positive emotional connections, and cultivates a love of reading and early childhood literacy. With over 200 recording locations worldwide at any given time, service members can read to the children who are special to them on military bases and outposts, deployed U.S. Navy ships, U.S. Coast Guard cutters, Armed Services YMCAs, and VA in-patient clinics. Since its inception, more than 2 million military parents, spouses, and children have benefited from the program. United Through Reading will soon bring storytime to military families through a new mobile application and cloud-based system, designed to make the story delivery process easier and more efficient for service members worldwide. Program participants overwhelmingly say that UTR recordings not only help them stay connected as a family but also decreases children’s anxiety about the separation. Additionally, they report that their children are more interested in reading and books.
